AfricaConnect Project

Project Background

The AfricaConnect project is a pan-African initiative aimed at providing high-speed internet connectivity for research and education networks (NRENs) across Africa. Co-funded by the European Union, it facilitates collaboration and knowledge sharing among academic institutions and researchers on a global scale. Since its inception, AfricaConnect has strengthened digital infrastructure, enabling African NRENs to connect to the global research and education network, advancing science, education, and innovation across the continent. The project has had three iterations since 2009: AfricaConnect 1, 2 and 3. It is set to go into its fourth iteration in 2025 to run until 2028.

  • Conducting advocacy efforts to raise awareness about the project’s importance.
  • Developing success stories that highlight the tangible impacts of improved connectivity on research and education in Africa.
  • Coordinating event management activities, including conferences and webinars to foster collaboration among stakeholders.
  • Facilitating knowledge exchange and collaboration among African and global NRENs.
  • Promoting capacity-building initiatives aimed at strengthening the technical and operational capacity of NRENs.

Key Partners

  • GEANT: European partner, supporting the global research and education network.

Project Impact

The AfricaConnect project has transformed the digital landscape for research and education in Africa. It has significantly improved internet infrastructure, providing African academic institutions with reliable connectivity. This has enabled enhanced collaboration with international peers, increased the continent’s research output, fostered innovation, and contributed to sustainable development goals. The project continues to empower researchers, students, and educators with the tools necessary to participate fully in the global knowledge economy.
